Highlights of the role: James looks after the country dining concept across the Home Counties. Hertford’s oldest hotel, The Salisbury Arms, is also James’s venture with 31 rooms, a function room, restaurant, two bars and a family lounge. As an Area Manager the most exciting part of the role is being out and seeing what goes on, talking to the teams and having a chat with the guests. Seeing and feeling the buzz of a peak shift is very thrilling to James – it is rewarding to not only see so many happy guests returning,  but seeing so many team members develop themselves.

What makes McMullen’s the company of choice:  McMullen’s gives one the space to evolve businesses and keep on evolving in order to stay ahead of the game. Although it may be a small company and wear a multitude of work hats, the team all work together towards a common goal.

Life prior to McMullen’s:  After completing an HND in Hotel Catering and Institutional Management, James worked at Allied with such brands as Muswells, Exchanges and Calendars before running a French Brasserie in Camden Town. He then moved to run Italian restaurants called Mamma Amalfi when James was appointed a Development Manager and transferred over to Cafe Rouge. The Spirit Group was the last stop for James, where he spent seven years working on their development team within different divisions including locals, city town, family dining and, finally, in the Chef and Brewer brand.
