Steven Gill
COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR
During my formative years at Leeds Polytechnic (where I studied for a degree in Business Studies) my passion for ale and pubs was such that I aspired to marry a pub landlord's daughter. The daughter of a builder had other ideas and so the best part of 30 years ago, I married the present Mrs Gill. I worked in clothing retail for seven years, but I was still attracted to the bright lights of the pub industry, continuing to spend as much time in pubs as I could. Having failed at my first ambition of marrying a pub landlord's daughter, I decided to opt for the next best thing - a job with a brewery! This decision saw my arrival at McMullen & Sons. I have worked for McMullen since 1990 and was appointed Commercial Director in 2005. I look after those areas of the business that support the operations function including licensing, purchasing, stocktaking, EPOS, HR, business planning and acquisition appraisal. Although Training, Recruitment and Catering also fall under my area of responsibility, I am pleased to say I am little more than a 'sound board' for the specialists we employ in this area. The aspect of my job I enjoy the most is finding better ways of doing things that either add value or save money.
