Success stories

Steve

THE PLOUGH, SEWARDSTONE

Steve first started working part-time in nightclubs while studying at college at the age of 18, and although he started a course at university, the licensed retail industry bug had caught him and he left to become a trainee manager in Northampton with the Mansfield Brewery.

When his then Manager’s accepted a job with McMullen’s, Steve joined them at the Chieftain (currently closed) in Welwyn to continue his training. After completing his Gold Award at the Chieftain, Steve transferred to the Plough at Enfield, as Assistant to consolidate his skills in a large food environment.

He was promoted as Manager to the Volunteer, and oversaw an overhaul of the food operation and a complete change of direction. Not one to sit back and relax, October 2007 saw Steve transfer to the Plough, at Sewardstone.

“Everyday is a challenge” Steve says, “New ideas, new problems that need resolving, the thought of working in a 9-5 job has never appealed”. Although Steve has worked for a number of different companies he considers McMullen’s the best “It’s great to pick up the phone and know who you are talking to. The fact that I’ve probably sat down with everyone at some stage and had a drink with them in a social environment really helps with understanding the other person’s viewpoint”.
