One Day Open Day
Hertford Food & Drink Festival Recap: Three years ago, Hertford Town Council started an annual celebration of food & drink. This year, McMullen’s were delighted to be gold sponsors of the event and opened the brewery for the occasion.
We love being able to open up our home base at 26 Old Cross, inviting locals on Saturday, 11th of October to experience the family history, be that in brewing, our pubs, transportation or our passionate people. Our brewery tours had sold out weeks before, but demand was evident on the day, so we listened and reacted, our brewers fitting in a further five tours that same day. The Whole Hop Brewery welcomed just over 100+ tour guests and served up a variety of our cask ales for sampling all day. Our pop up Macs House lounge was well received and became the hub for beer enthusiasts for the duration. Chris Evans, our head brewer made exclusive selection boxes and glassware for the occasion including craft beers Stronghart, Hertford Castle and an unreleased bottled McMullen Pale Ale. For motor lovers and the curious, our latest delivery drays the FLH Volvo truck was parked up alongside its predecessor the old TK Bedford from the 1980s.
Our head office chefs Lee and Paul were busy hosting the pop up luncheon restaurant called Top Table, wining and dining ten foodie guests in our Training & Development Kitchen, little tasters to go with our cask beer in the yard, as well as preparing a scrumptious spread of afternoon tea specials. To add to the event, we invited local jam and jellies producer Purely Clear Preserves, who talked all things good & fruity to spread on toast and beyond. Our coffee supplier Kimbo Espresso Italiano travelled to Hertford to serve complimentary brews, made by barista Emanuele, out of their very epic little van. To complete the picture, Future Living Hertford charity were present with a welcoming stall of yummy cakes and heart-warming proper sausage sandwiches.
Overall, it was a fun filled day of community, food, beer, history and good times with lots of British sunshine. It was pleasing to hear that together with the visitors donations to our lunch, brewery tours and afternoon teas, Future Living were able to raise over £1,200. Due to the large amount of interest in our brewery, the McMullen family are considering introducing brewery tours to the general public in the new year to share more of what we love.
McMullen real ales also made an appearance on the Sunday at Hertford’s Castle Beer Festival and donated £1 per pint sold for our Mayor’s charity of choice.
We are so grateful for our dedicated team members, the locals who showed support on the day and hope to see you in the near future! To be in the know follow us on twitter @mcmullens1827 or sign up to our REALE Club.
