Happy Birthday Chicken & Grill!

Happy Birthday to our Chicken & Grill pubs!

Saturday 24th November marks 10 years since the opening of our first ever Chicken & Grill pub, the Bulls Head in Turnford.

The plans for our local favourites were hatched back in 2008, McMullen’s wanted to create a new and exciting place for the community to enjoy which stood out from the rest. The Bulls Head went through a stunning refurbishment filling it with and abundance of personality and character. Its popularity amongst the people of Turnford and further afield set the way for more and more C&G pubs to sprout around Hertfordshire.

“Our internal mantra for C&G was always for it to be an ‘aspirational pub with reassuring grub’!” says Heydon Mizon, our Joint Managing Director.

“Whilst that terrible mantra may not excite professional marketers, we wanted to run comfortable, relaxed and unpretentious places that were real pubs but that looked amazing and that truly stood out.

Over the next decade we went on to open a further 14 dedicated Chicken and Grill pubs with even more in the pipeline. These include the Red Lion in Hatfield - the most popular pub name in the UK but this one is undeniably one of the friendliest and best, the Jolly Postie in Royston with its incredibly unique interior including actual vintage postie van you can dine in, and Jolly Farmers in Enfield more affectionately known as the Frog’s Bottom.

Recent years have seen the addition of the royal trio, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis; all of which being the first pubs to be named after the new members of the royal family. The Prince Louis, formerly Oaklands Inn received a £1 million refurbishment before being opened to the public once more.

The future of our Chicken & Grill pubs is a bright one. Thanks to some wonderful years of growth delivered by fantastic teams and loyal local guests we are always seeking to buy and build more pubs.

“Many of our C&G pubs were bought from other companies and had been unsuccessful for decades, many were boarded up when we bought them and were destined to become flats or care homes had we not taken the plunge - it is probably these that we are most proud of.”

In the pursuit to keep the local pub alive we are proud to have built 3 pubs from the ground up holding the strong Chicken & Grill name and creating jobs and hubs for the community.
