The Greyhound Pub Reopens in Bengeo
The doors of Macs’ most long standing pub are to be once again open to the eagerly waiting local community of Bengeo.
On Boxing Day of 1836 Peter McMullen made the first of many important purchases that would start nearly 200 years of unwavering commitment to Hertfordshire. For the princely sum of £435 The Greyhound pub in Bengeo was purchased, along with 3 cottages and 4 acres of land.
Over the last two centuries this significant building has seen 9 recessions, 3 great depressions, world wars and witnessed its fair share of changes to the local community.
Now in its 181st year of proudly supporting the McMullen name, The Greyhound has undergone an extensive refurbishment and been given a brand-new lease of life. This comes after a fire in January of this year nearly destroyed one of the greatest assets of Peter McMullen’s part in the family history. Luckily the pub survived a near disaster and stands today as a real tribute to Peter’s legacy.
The fire, which caused extensive damage to the kitchen, bar and upstairs of the pub has led to a full renovation of the property at a cost of £200k led by own very own interior designer Kerry Walters and carried out by the fantastic team from SW Bruce who recently aided us in the refurbishment of The White Hart in Hertford. This along with great support from Phil at Buzz Catering who has helped install a superb kitchen.
Lining the walls of the pub you will find snippets of its vast history, images of years gone by where the building has stood proud in the centre of the local community. Enjoy the relaxed and homely feel of the place which still proudly serves locally brewed McMullen ale so many years on.
We welcome the new publicans Steven & Amanda and their daughter Beth to the helm of the pub and know that they will join a long list of guardians of this pub supported by the local community of Bengeo.
Expect a rustic but classy feel to the establishment, with an entirely welcoming atmosphere. We’ve kept the traditional two-bar layout with an intimate homely bar area, leading into an extended dining space fit for any family occasion.
