Chicken & Grill No. 9; an inspiring pub, and a former hotel and banqueting suite, in a historic location that’s been with McMullen since 1934.
Located a short stroll from the grounds of Hatfield House where history states that news of Queen Mary’s death on 17th of November 1558 reached Elizabeth, where she was said to be out in the park, sitting under an oak tree. Upon hearing that she was Queen, legend has it that Elizabeth quoted the 118th Psalm’s twenty-third line, in Latin: “A Dominum factum est illud, et est mirabile in oculis notris” (“It is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.”)
Famous for our rotisserie chicken, fabulous ice cream sundaes and locally brewed beers. We also offer freshly made cocktails and all of your favourite wines – to be enjoyed in our spacious bar, restaurant or alfresco in our garden when the sun is shining.

Parking at the Red Lion
We’ve got parking available for our guests and use ANPR cameras to help manage the car park.
When you arrive, please take a moment to enter your vehicle registration into the tablet inside the pub. This helps us make sure genuine guests can park with us and avoids any unwanted parking charges.
If you need any help, just ask a member of the team – we’re always happy to help.
Private Hire, Birthdays and Events
Our lovely function space is available for private hire. We cater for formal dining events, buffets, drinks and nibbles or just drinks, whatever you prefer.
We can seat up to 60 guests for dining, or 80 for less formal events.
