The Town and Gown is a unique and must try experience in Cambridge open from early ’til late. The name derives from the two distinct communities of any university town, the local population and the university dwelling community and the ever improving relationship between them. Our Town and Gown is a space for both to meet, drink, eat and revel, and has been a Mac’s pub since 1999.
The Theatre is a revival of the building’s history former Arts Cinema from 1933 trading as the Cosmopolitan Cinema. Our Black Box Theatre located on the top floor of the venue is a wonderfully intimate fringe theatre with an abundance of shows and experiences from the moment we open the doors.
From solo brunching to party nibbling, casual dining to dirty dancing – locally brewed beers and spirits to handmade cocktails, black box theatre shows to DJ’s, traditional piano playing for intimate dinners to live bands to party with!

Valentine's at the Town & Gown

Private Hire, Birthdays and Events
Our mezzanine is perfect for dining and can be hired for private use. This area has 36 covers for seated dining or we can accommodate up to 50 people with a buffet. This space is on a separate level but within the main bar so that you still get the atmosphere of the main bar area.
Our theatre bar is the perfect setting for a sociable gathering. Ideal for dining or a more relaxed get-together, we are able to offer relaxed dining or our popular buffet in this space. The theatre bar is available to hire separately or with the theatre space on dates when no performances are programmed. Our theatre terrace is hidden away on the theatre floor and is included when you hire the theatre bar. Perfect for those summer evenings for some alfresco drinks or taking in some air during your function. This area has a canopy so can be used if the weather isn’t desirable.
Located on the top floor our intimate theatre is available for private hire on days when we do not have a performance playing. The entire top floor can be separated from the rest of the venue so it’s perfect for keeping your function all in one place. Wheelchair accessible with a maximum capacity of 100 and the potential to also hire the Theatre Bar with a maximum capacity of 65 this space is great for parties, celebrations, conferences or a meeting room with a difference. As a professional theatre, the space is well equipped with theatre lighting, sound and presentation facilities. Hire prices for the theatre space are based on the individual requirements of each booking. The theatre floor also features a roof terrace which is the perfect place to take in some fresh air during your event.
